Founder and Chief Designer John Franks brought aerospace principles into audio engineering, developing high-frequency switch-mode power supplies and proprietary MOSFET designs capable of delivering exceptional speed, control, and transparency — qualities critical in both aircraft systems and high-end amplification

On the digital side, Chord’s long-standing Digital Consultant Rob Watts rejected conventional off-the-shelf DAC chips, instead designing custom FPGA-based DAC architectures. This allowed the creation of Chord’s proprietary WTA (Watts Transient Aligned) filters and Pulse Array technology, extracting dramatically more timing and musical information from digital recordings — up to hundreds of times the resolving power of traditional chip DACs

Every Chord Electronics product is designed, machined, assembled, and tested in the UK, using aircraft-grade aluminium chassis and tightly controlled manufacturing processes. Each unit is individually inspected, measured, and listened to before leaving the factory, ensuring long-term reliability and performance consistency

This approach extends all the way to Chord’s reference-level products, where individual units are effectively built to order and curated by dedicated engineers
